Making your way to Rhode Island
Or more specifically, Newport
Getting to Newport
-
Flying into Providence (PVD) - 30 min drive
Flying into Boston (BOS) - 1.5 hour drive
Please note: if you will be arriving late at night into BOS, we highly recommend coordinating your transportation in advance. Ubers and Taxis to Newport after 10pm can be very hard to find. -
Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor offers daily service to two nearby connecting stations: Kingston RI (KIN), and Providence (PVD)
From the train stations, we would recommend Uber and Lyft
-
Newport, RI is a summer-vacation spot, so we expect Ubers and Lyfts to be readily available throughout the entire weekend.
Should you choose to rent a car, please confirm your accommodations have parking. The Vanderbilt and Chart House Inn both have parking available for guests.
Exploring Rhode Island
-
Newport has a rich cultural heritage: from its pivotal role in early American history to stunning ocean views. If you have time to explore explore, we recommend any of the following:
Ocean and Views
Walk the iconic 3.5-mile Cliff Walk, combining breathtaking Atlantic Ocean views with historic Gilded Age mansions like The Breakers and Marble House
Take a scenic drive along Ocean Drive, a 10-mile route featuring spectacular ocean vistas and historic landmarks such as Fort Adams and President Eisenhower’s summer White House.
Historical Sights
Tour The Breakers, the grandest of Newport’s famous mansions and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s legacy.
Visit the International Tennis Hall of Fame, located in a historic colonial-era building and a hub for tennis history.
Explore the Touro Synagogue, the oldest standing synagogue in North America and a National Historic Landmark.
-
Providence has a thriving food scene that, in the last few years, has made its way down to Newport. Some of our favorite spots, outside of the Vanderbilt, include the following:
Enjoy a cocktail and appetizer at Flora
Share pastas, pizza, and more at Bar ‘Cino
Grab a fresh sandwich from the Roasted Clove
Savor the fresh air and inventive dishes at Giusto
-
One of our favorite things to do when exploring is to seek out great local coffee (for Julia), and tea (for Kevin). While Rhode Island has several beloved spots, the nearest to us are:
Simple Merchant Coffee (Newport)
Borealis Coffee Company (Bristol - Kevin’s hometown)
Groundswell Cafe + Bakery (Tiverton - where Kevin and Julia stopped on their way to the beach where he proposed)
